"The Story of Adam and Eve"
"From the Book of Genesis"
"Chapter 2-3" On the sixth day of creation, God had decided
to make a man that looked just like He did.
To do this He reached down with His hand
and picked up a handful of soil and clay
from the earth He had made. He molded thisinto the form of a man.
Then God breathed life into the man and he became
a living person. Then God decided to make a place for the
man to live. In the eastern part of His new world, God
planted a beautiftil garden which He named the Garden of
Eden. In the Garden were the prettiest flowers and trees
with the best tasting, juiciest fruits.
Right in the middle of the Garden he planted the
Tree of Life and the Tree of Conscience. The Tree of
Conscience had the power to give the knowledge of good
and bad.
Then God made a river flow through the Garden of
Eden so all of the trees, plants and flowers would have
water to help them grow. The river flowed from the
Garden and out into four great rivers of the world.God then gave the man He'd created a job. The
man was to be the gardener of the Garden of Eden. He
was responsible for tending and caring for all of the
plants, flowers and trees in the Garden of Eden. But God
gave the man a warning, He said; "You can eat any fruit
you can find in the Garden, except for the fruit of the Tree
of Conscience. If you eat that fruit you will become aware
of good and evil. If you eat that fruit, you will die."
Later on the sixth day God decided that it was not
good for the man He'd made to be alone. He named the
man Adam and brought all of the animals to him to see
what he would call them. Adam gave each different
creature a name. This was how all of the animals in the
world were first named.
God saw that from among all of the animals Adam
had named, there wasn't one who could be a helper and
companion for him. So God made Adam fall into a deep
sleep. While he was sleeping, God took a rib from out of
Adam. From this rib God made a wife for the first man.
When Adam awoke and saw her he said, "I will
call her 'woman' since she came out of a man." They were
together and even though they were naked, they were not
embarrassed or ashamed.
Elsewhere in the Garden was a snake. The snake
was a very sneaky creature. When the woman was by
herself, the snake slithered up to her and asked, "Did God
tell you that you could eat from every tree in the Garden?"
"Every one but one," said the woman. "If we eat
the fruit from the Tree of Conscience, we will die.""That's not true," the snake hissed. "If you eat it
you won't die. Instead, you'll become like God Himself,
knowing the difference between good and evil."
The woman listened to the snake. When she saw
the fruit of the Tree of Conscience it looked beautiful and
delicious. She picked offsome and ate it. Then she gave a
piece of the fruit to Adam and he ate it too.
All of a sudden they realized for the first time that
they were naked. They ran to a fig tree and picked off the
leaves. They strung them together and covered themselves
with the leaves around their hips.
That evening, God came to stroll in the Garden as
he often did. Adam and his wife hid from the Lord. "Why
are you hiding?" He asked.
Adam answered, "I didn't want you to see me
naked, so I hid."
"Who told you that you were naked?" the Lord
said. "Have you eaten the fruit I told you never to touch?"
"Yes," Adam admitted. "The woman you gave me
brought me the fruit and I ate it."
"But the snake tricked me," the woman said.
The Lord looked at the snake. "This is your
punishment," he said. "You are cursed. You will live in
the dust and crawl on you belly for all your life. From
now on you and the woman will be enemies. All her
children will be the enemies of all of yours. They will
strike at your head if you strike at their heels."
Then God said to Adam, "Since you have
disobeyed me, your life will never be as easy as it has
been. From now on you will have to work on the land
before it will grow anything. You will have to work all of
your life. When your life is over, you will return to the
earth. I made you from the soil and you will turn back
into soil when your life is over."
God then gave Adam and his wife clothes made
from the skin of animals. Then he told them to leave the
Garden of Eden and to never return. To make certain they
obeyed Him this time. He ordered one of His angels to
stand guard at the entrance to the Garden with a flaming
sword so no one would ever enter it again.
Out alone in the world, Adam gave his wife a
name. "You will be called 'Eve,'" he said. "It is a word
that means 'the giver of life.' You will be the mother of all
mankind."
