"God's Promise to Abram"
Book of Genesis Chapter 17,
Verses 1-27; Chapter 18, Verses 1-15Abram was 86 years old when Ishmael was born. He and Sarai still wanted a son of their own to lead their people, just as God had promised. They were beginning to believe it would never happen since they were so old.
Some years later, when Abram was 99, the Lord God Jehovah came to see him again. When Abram saw Him, he fell down and worshipped Him.
God was going to keep His promise to Abram, just as He always does. "I am giving you a new name," God told Abram. "From now on, your name is Abraham, which means 'The Father of Nations."Your wife will no longer be known as Sarai. Now her name will be Sarah, which means 'Princess.' She will be the mother of great nations."
Sometime later, the Lord God Jehovah visited Abraham again. This time. He brought two angels with Him. God and the angels were disguised to look like men, but Abraham recognized them when he saw them walking toward his tent.
Abraham jumped up and ran to greet the three men and invited them to lunch. He served them cheese and milk and veal.
One of the men, who was God in disguise said, "Next year is the year Sarah will have her son." Inside the tent, Sarah heard these words. She laughed to herself and thought, "I am too old to have a baby. I am 90 years old." Since this visitor was really God, he heard Sarah's thoughts and said, "Why did you laugh? Nothing is too hard for God.
"I didn't laugh," Sarah lied, but God knew she had. Sarah realized that this man was really God since he had heard her thoughts.
When her son was born, God told Sarah to name him Isaac, which means "laughter."
