"Velvet Tips and Ideas Page"VELVET - oh so beautiful yet so hard to work with sometimes! .....and soooo expencive if you mess up! Well, with this page we're hoping to remedy some of the common problems when using velvets, plus give you some fun ideas.
Those of you that have some helpful velveting tips please submit them. We would all like to hear them :-)
I don't claim to be a velvet expert... but here are a few tips to start with:
1. Before you start cutting velvet, make sure it's not creased or wrinkled. If so do not iron! Hang and steam it from the back of the fabric. Steam on the textured side can damage it.
2. Always work with a single layer.
3. Cut only a single layer at a time.
4. Lay out your pattern according to the nap and run in the same direction, and use sharp straight pins."Embossing Velvet"
To emboss velvet, it's really very easy. First you need a good rubber stamp of the design.... or even a nicely carved - but flat piece of wood. The rubber stamp should have a good heat resistant glue holding the rubber to the backing. With the stamp on a table face up, place the velvet face down to the stamp. Place some cheese cloth on the back of the velvet and steam press that spot. Don't push the iron back and forth. Just press for about 15 seconds. Lift iron and wait till cool. If the embossing is not tight, hold it 5 seconds longer until you get the right timing. Try this on a piece of scrap of the fabric that you will be using first. Some velvets don't take well to it and others do. That's all there is too it.
However, the embossed velvet should not be washed or pressed or it can lose the impression. Dry clean / no press.
